You&#039;ve raised some important issues: 1) event streams from social media and sensors can provide useful information for emergency management; 2) filtering social media feeds for useful information is hard; and 3) emergency managers don&#039;t trust social media.

The trust issue will resolve if we figure out how to make social media information relevant and reliable.  That&#039;s a tall order.  I don&#039;t have an answer.  But, I think that the folks who might are using big data statistics to solve hard problems like language translation, intelligence and brand awareness.  

It would be interesting to find out if methods developed for solving complex intelligence and business problems using big data could help us in the EM space.</description>
